The HWP represents a collection of community groups that have a shared vision to see the Hurunui district become a lush and green productive area. They have the support of the landowners across 42,000 hectares, most of whom have no current access to water for irrigation. North Canterbury residents see the irrigation project as a way to improve welfare or the entire community, which is highly dependent on agriculture for sustainability. The Waitohi Irrigation and Hydro Scheme would allow North Canterbury to gain a water storage scheme with the potential to generate $470million in GDP per annum, and create more than 300 new jobs for the wider Canterbury region.
Virtual View was engaged to produce a series of photo simulations to show how the water scheme would look from selected viewpoints.
Any objections were addressed. In August 2013 consent was granted.
